How to repair damaged hair

From bleaching to hot, dry weather, a lot of things can be rough on your hair. Fortunately, damaged hair isn’t a lost cause; some hair restoration work may be able to help. Here’s how to repair damaged hair.

How to repair damaged hair

  • If you’re washing your hair every day, you might be stripping out its natural protective oils too quickly. Try cutting back to washing every two or three days. If you keep up this routine for a while, you may start to notice some improvement.

  • Take a look at your diet. Having a healthy body will help you grow a healthy head of hair. In particular, for hair maintenance, make sure you’re eating enough protein, zinc, and iron. 1

  • Try a hair mask once a week. It’s a deep conditioning treatment that can be the salvation of damaged hair.

  • Leave-in conditioners can also be great for brittle hair, as they’ll provide moisture all day.

  • Avoid very tight hairstyles. They can cause breakage and weakening, especially if you already have brittle hair.

  • The ends of hair tend to be more prone to dryness and damage. If your roots are fine but your ends feel like straw, one solution is to cut your hair shorter, getting rid of the damaged part and leaving healthy hair.

  • You don’t have to do this on your own. Some hair salons offer hair restoration treatments.

The issue of heat: damaged hair risk reduction

You’re probably already aware that applying high heat to your hair on a regular basis can cause damage. Straighteners, curling irons, and even hairdryers carry a certain level of risk.

For a lot of people, though, it’s not as simple as giving up heat styling tools for good. What if you have to go out at short notice, and you need to get your hair dry quickly? What if having straight hair has become a part of your identity?

Moderation. Skip the heat styling tools when you have a chance. Air-dry your hair when you have the time, for example, or leave your hair unstraightened on days when you’re not spending much time around people who will see it. When you do pick up the tools, turn the heat down and see if you can still get the result you need at a lower temperature.

Preparation. When you’re planning to use heat styling tools, prepare your hair with a heat protectant first.

Equipment. Use styling tools that have inbuilt heat reduction technology, such as a ThermoProtect hairdryer or straighteners with a UniTemp sensor.
