Master the art of ironing

Ironing and steaming is a job that can sometimes seem a little bit arduous, but achieving that perfect look you’re after doesn’t have to be time-consuming or difficult. We’ve prepared a few tips that will help you save time and iron like an expert.

The basics

Making use of your entire ironing board will simplify the task at hand and let you target areas of your clothing that are more difficult to reach. For example, you can use the narrower end of the board for creases near armholes by stretching the area out over the end and ironing out the wrinkles. When it comes to technique, it’s important to iron in long strokes and avoid moving the iron around too much as this can create more creases. Finally, hang everything up once you’ve finished ironing — this helps keep fabrics smooth and wrinkle-free. If saving time is what you’re after, iron in batches: the process can be time consuming, so tackling a bundle of clothes at a time will help.

Ironing dress shirts

This may seem like a difficult feat, but it doesn’t have to be. With the tips and steps we’ve put together, you won’t have to think twice the next time you tackle the task.

  • Start by ironing the back of the collar, going from the edges towards the middle and then do the same with the cuffs. When you hit a button, iron carefully around it to avoid damage.

  • After the cuffs, you can iron the sleeves by moving your way from the cuffs to the shoulders and then iron the front (careful with the buttons!) and back of your shirt.

  • To remove wrinkles from the shoulders, place the narrow end of the ironing board inside one of the sleeves and start on the outer edges once it’s taut.

Delicate fabrics

When it comes to delicate fabrics like silk or cashmere, steaming is the best way to go. Use Philips’ handheld steamers to prevent burning when you’re removing creases from party dresses that can’t handle the direct heat from a hot iron or when you need to de-wrinkle a business suit, for example.

Steaming is gentle on those items of yours that need a little extra care (wool and more delicate synthetic fabrics can also be steamed along with cashmere and silk). It not only provides a hygienic way to keep your clothes wrinkle free, it also gives your garments a more casual, less rigid look when finished.

Remember...

No matter the garment, make sure that all stains have been removed before you get to work because the heat from your iron can make the stain settle permanently. If you’re having trouble removing tough creases, dampen the area a bit before you continue ironing. Always iron darker garments inside-out to avoid a sheen on the fabrics.
