Six ponytail hairstyles to style up or down

The ponytail is a simple and practical hairstyle, and it offers a ton of variation. Here are six quick, easy styles for ponytail hair.

Ponytail hairstyle 1: the basic ponytail

Before getting into fancier styles for ponytail hair, we need to master the basics. This is the simplest of ponytail hairstyles. If you’ve never tied a ponytail before, hey, we all have to start somewhere. Here are the basics of how to tie a ponytail:

Ponytail hairstyle 1: the basic ponytail

1.      Comb your hair.

2.      Put a hair tie around your wrist.

3.      Gather your hair into a bunch at the back of your head, or wherever you want the ponytail to be. A low ponytail is easiest, but you can gather the hair higher up if you want a high ponytail, or even create a side ponytail by gathering it to one side.

4.      While you’re holding your hair with your hair-tied hand, use your other hand to tug the hair tie off your wrist and over your hair.

5.      Twist the hair tie to create a figure-8 loop: one half of the 8 should have your hair in it, and the other half should be empty. Pull your hair through the empty loop as well.

6.      If it’s not secure enough, twist the loop you’ve just passed over your hair to create a third loop, and pull your hair through that, too.

7.      Adjust the position of the hair tie to your taste. You can pull the ends of the ponytail apart to force the tie further towards your scalp or pull the tie back to make it sit further down the ponytail. If you want more volume around your ponytail, you can pull your hair out of it gently using your hands.

Ponytail hairstyle 2: the half ponytail

If you want a ponytail, but you also like having your hair down, why not both? Tie a basic ponytail, but only gather together the top part of your hair, leaving the layers beneath to fall as usual.

Ponytail hairstyle 3: the double ponytail

Not sure about how your half ponytail looks? You don’t have to go back to basics. Instead, gather your half ponytail and the rest of your hair together, and tie it further down for a unique double-pony look.

Ponytail hairstyles 4: the bubble ponytail

If you’ve got hair to spare and two ties just aren’t enough, try out the bubble ponytail. You’ll need volume to make this one work, so use a hairdryer with a volume-boosting diffuser, like the DryCare Advanced dryer. Tie a basic ponytail, then tie a second hair tie a couple of inches below the base, then another hair tie a couple of inches below that, and keep going until you’ve sectioned off all your hair. Gently tug each section into a rounded shape, so your ponytail looks like a string of bubbles or beads. This one looks great as a high ponytail.

Ponytail hairstyles: the false knot

How to curl hair without a curling iron: using rollers

There are plenty of ponytail tips out there, but this is one of the best. Sometimes you’ll see a ponytail that seems to be secured with a knot of hair, rather than a hair tie. It looks pretty difficult and high-effort. Actually, you can achieve this effect with a simple illusion.

1.      Tie a basic ponytail. Use a plain, thin hair tie that’s close in color to your hair.

2.      Gather a strip of hair from the bottom of your ponytail. You can braid it, if you want to make it look like your hair’s tied up in a braid, but it’s not essential.

3.      Wrap it around the base of your ponytail, covering the hair tie. If your hair is long, you may need to wrap it around several times.

4.      Secure the wrapped strip of hair with a clip or pin underneath the ponytail.

How to curl hair without a curling iron: using a hairdryer

This is a really cute and easy low ponytail style to try out. It looks a little fancier than the average ponytail while still being simple enough for everyday wearing.

1.      Tie a basic ponytail.

2.      Split your hair in two right above the hair tie; pull the halves apart to create a hole in the middle.

3.      Loop your ponytail up over the hair tie and tug it down through the hole, between the halves of your hair above the tie.

4.      Tighten your ponytail up as required. Try to make sure the hair tie is hidden by your hair.

Finally, a couple of ponytail tips: a high ponytail can hold better with hair that hasn’t been washed in a day or two, or with a little hairspray. To get your ponytail looking really sleek, use a heated straightening brush.
