Straight, fine hair can sometimes lie a little flat. One way to combat this is to use curlers or straighteners to put waves in your hair. Again, applying heat to your hair carries a risk of damage, so it’s worth using a straightener with heat protection features.
Of course, sometimes you want straight hair. That doesn’t mean you can’t have volume. Work in layers, and try pulling your hair up rather than down as you straighten.

There are obviously limits – shaving your head won’t give you more volume – but shortening your hair can sometimes work as a strategy for how to make hair look thicker. If your hair’s on the longer side, cutting it back to your shoulders or shorter could give the impression of more volume. Changing your parting can give you more volume on the top of your head. If you have a center parting, try out a side part and see how it looks.
It may go against your instincts, but try shampooing after your conditioner, rather than before. Conditioner has a tendency to make hair lie flatter and using the shampoo second will help to counteract that. If you have long hair, you’ll also want to keep the conditioner to the lengths rather than close to the root. If these methods for how to get thicker hair don’t work for you, there are hair products that are specifically designed to give the appearance of thick hair. Volumizing hairspray or thickening mousse, for example, can add volume to fine hair.
